Coupons vs. Generics
I have been stumped lately in regards to how people save so much money with coupons. I even signed up for a free e-course on couponing, but this is what I have noticed: Every time I get excited about using a coupon, I take it to Wal-mart and find that their generic brand is cheaper than the cost of a name-brand item after coupon. What's more, I like Great Value brand really well, sometimes better than the real thing. Something else I have discovered is that Dollar General has their canned soups and vegetables regularly priced at 50-60 cents a can, which is cheaper than coupons OR generics at Wal-mart! I wonder if any seasoned coupon experts could comment on this so that I can better understand the value of coupons.

Amy, I am not a couponer yet but our daughter in law is getting into that and she said you hold the coupons until there is a sale on that item, that is usually when you get the bargain. The sales have a cycle to them, it is watching, waiting, and learning the sale cycles....
Amy - I think you are ahead of the game by already buying generic and finding stores that are cheaper week after week. With the coupons, you either use them like the other commenter said -when there is a sale that would get you the better deal - or on things that you buy all the time that are brand names. Another good thing to do is watch the ads for the "killer deals" and then only buy that one thing. They hope that the super great deals will get you in the door and then you will do all your shopping there and they will recoup their money.
holy cow...four months from your first post to your second well anyway I just facebooked you the same thing I was going to write here...I'd love to spend some time together talking about coupons ect...it would also be a good way for us to get to know each other we have never really had any kind of interaction outside of sunday school.
